Somewhat last minute trip, on a tight vacation schedule.
Adventurous first night, where we were hoping to camp, but couldn't
find anything but an extremely sketchy beach close to the airport.
Suspect people hanging around the beach at 10pm + the fact it was
raining made us call the local hostel, which had a private room,
but was also a bit sketchy... :) The next day, we drove up Waimea
Canyon, and did a hike to the top of a 800 ft waterfall - cool!
We then got some shave ice at the famous JoJo's (yum!), and drove
to Hanalei where we had an amazing dinner. We camped at Anini Beach,
which was fairly nice, although a bit crowded.
We really wanted to sea kayak the Napali coast and camp there for
a couple of nights, but the surf was pretty high (9-10' swells),
so that wasn't really an option. Also, permits for camping there
seem to be required months in advance. So we ended up booking a
boat tour, which also gave us an opportunity to see the coast - it's
quite wild. Still, have to go back to sea kayak it! Hanging out in
Hanalei for the day, we also took a nap at Tunnels Beach, and
explored some of the other restaurants.
On Saturday night, we stayed at an amazing vacation home which
we booked last minute after calling around. The hostess was so
nice, she let us check out at 7pm the next night, so we could
shower before going to the airport! Amazing hospitality (and luck).
So we left our stuff there, and went diving on Sunday morning -
check out the video for the highlights. Then we drove to Poipu, saw
how crowded it was, and drove to some more remote but beautiful
beach where we hung out for the afternoon. And before you knew it,
we had a flight to catch!
For some reason, there are tonnes of these dudes everywhere in Kauai!
